The Challenge Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held annually each March at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales during the autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1000 metres and worth $175,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Challenge Stakes was won by Hay List from Keen Commander with Solar Charged third.
Typically held on Gr1 Randwick Guineas day, the 2011 Challenge Stakes has held on a Sunday as a standalone feature race meeting at Warwick Farm.
The Challenge Stakes is a good quality sprint race run under weight-for-age conditions and generally sees a field of more than handy sprinters assembled. Raced at level weights, the better horses entered for the race have a decided advantage and more often than not the classier gallopers will figure in the finish.
Sprinters from this race may consider tackling other short sprint races like the Gr2 Star Kingdom Stakes at Rosehill on Slipper day or the Gr1 The Galaxy later on at the Randwick carnival.
Hay List (2011) chased home champion sprinter Black Caviar in the Gr1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington prior to winning this race and recent Challenge Stakes winners include De Lightning Ridge (2010) and Olonana (2009).
