Blamey Stakes

The Blamey Stakes is a Group 2 race held each year in March at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne during the Melbourne autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres under set weight & penalty conditions with prizemoney of $220,000. The 2013 Blamey Stakes resulted in a dead heat between Budriguez & Puissance De Lune with with Wall Street running third.

The Blamey Stakes is held on the same day as the $1,000,000 Gr1 Newmarket Handicap and the $1,000,000 Gr1 Australian Cup on Super Saturday of Racing at Flemington, the Victoria Racing Club's biggest race day of the autumn.

The Blamey Stakes is a good quality race for open horses and the set weight & penalty conditions of the race tends to favour the better gallopers entered and every now and then a top class galloper may find his name on the winner's trophy.

Some quality types have saluted in the Blamey Stakes over the years, including horses of the calibre of Apache Cat (2007), Durbridge (1994-95), Better Loosen Up (1990-91), and Vo Rogue (1988-89).

The race suits horses who may have come from the Gr1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield in February or perhaps an emerging three-year-old galloper who may want to take on the older horse in a slightly weaker group race than the featured Group 1 races of the autumn.

Green Moon (2012) returned in the spring to win the Gr1 Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November after taking out this race in the autumn.

Budriguez (2013) & Puissance De Lune (2013) dead-heated for first in this event and recent Blamey Stakes winners include Green Moon (2012) and Whobegotyou (2011).

Budriguez ran third in the Gr2 St George Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield prior to winning this event and then went on to take out the Gr3 Victoria Handicap over 1400m at the same track at his next start, while Puissance De Lune (2013) was resuming from a spring spell.
