The Blamey Stakes is a Group 2 race held each year in March at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne during the Melbourne autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres under set weight & penalty conditions with prizemoney of $250,000. The 2011 Blamey Stakes was won by Whobegotyou from Dao Dao with Fanjura third.
The Blamey Stakes is held on the same day as the $1,000,000 Gr1 Newmarket Handicap and the $1,000,000 Gr1 Australian Cup on Super Saturday of Racing at Flemington, the Victoria Racing Club's biggest race day of the autumn.
The Blamey Stakes is a good quality race for open horses and the set weight & penalty conditions of the race tends to favour the better gallopers entered and every now and then a top class galloper may find his name on the winner's trophy.
Some quality types have saluted in the Blamey Stakes over the years, including horses of the calibre of Apache Cat (2007), Durbridge (1994-95), Better Loosen Up (1990-91), and Vo Rogue (1988-89).
The race suits horses who may have come from the Gr1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield in February or perhaps an emerging three-year-old galloper who may want to take on the older horse in a slightly weaker group race then the featured Group 1 races of the autumn.
Whobegotyou (2011) ran second in the Futurity Stakes before scoring in this event and recent Blamey Stakes winners have been Lord tavistock (2010) and Largo Lad (2009).
