The Alister Clark Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-old colts and geldings that takes place annually each March at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne during the Melbourne autumn racing carnival. The race is run under set weights & penalty conditions over a distance of 2040 metres and is worth $200,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Alister Clark Stakes was taken out by Domesky from Coldens Choice with Folding Gear third.
From 1987 to 1997 the Alister Clark Stakes was run over a distance of 2040 metres before it changed to become a 1600 metre event from 1998 onwards. The race is now run over the same distance as the Moonee Valley Racing Club's major race, the Gr1 WS Cox Plate.
The Alister Clark Stakes is a good quality three-year-old race for colts & geldings held on a Friday night under lights during the Moonee Valley autumn racing carnival, one week before the Gr1 William Reid Stakes at the same track.
Over the years the Alister Clark Stakes has unearthed a number of potential stars, with horses such as Titanic Jack (2003), Blevic (1995), Naturalism (1992), Durbridge (1991) and Zabeel (1990) all winning this race.
The Gr2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield and the Gr3 CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington are good lead up races to this event and Spinney (2006) was the last horse to win the Autumn Classic & Alister Clark Stakes double, while Lieutenant (2005) was the most recent winner of the CS Hayes Stakes & Alister Clark Stakes double.
Domesky (2011) ran fourth in the Autumn Classic prior to winning this event and recent Alister Clark Stakes winners have been Linton (2010) and Pre Eminence (2009).
