The AJC Carbine Club Stakes is a three-year-old event raced under set weights and penalty conditions each year in April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2012 AJC Carbine Club Stakes was won by Fat Al from Now You Know with Galah third.
The AJC Carbine Club Stakes tends to attract those three-year-old gallopers who may not be up to better quality 3yo events held during the carnival such as the Gr1 AJC Derby or Gr1 AJC Oaks and the race generally assembles handy types rather than the elite.
Good types such as Le Zagaletta (1999), Juggler (1995) and Golden Sword (1993) have managed to claim victory over the years but the race itself tends to produce average types rather than any superstars of the turf.
A race like the Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill in March provides a good lead-up race to this event although the Phar Lap is run at level weights whereas this event is run under set weight + penalty conditions, which favours the better performed horses in the race.
Fat Al (2012) won the listed Albury Guineas over 1400m at Albury prior to winning this event and then went on to win the Gr3 Frank Packer Plate at his next start.
Recent AJC Carbine Club Stakes winners include Needs Further (2011) and Al Dhafra (2010).
