The AJC Australian Oaks is a Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies that is held annually one week after the AJC Australian Derby each April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over 2400 metres under set weight conditions and worth $550,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 AJC Australian Oaks was won by Absolutely from Shamrocker with Pinker Pinker third.
Taking place on Doncaster Day, which is one of the biggest race days of the autumn at the Randwick race track, the AJC Australian Oaks runs alongside feature Group 1 races the Doncaster Handicap over 1600m and The Galaxy over 1100m.
The AJC Australian Oaks is is the premier staying race for three-year-old fillies during the Sydney autumn carnival and is run over the classic oaks distance of 2400m at set weights which favours the better females in the race.
The race is a blue ribbon event for young females on the Australian racing calendar and can increase the winner's value immeasurably should they go on to become a broodmare at the end of their career. Any 3yo fillies competing in the Oaks may come via the Gr1 Storm Queen Stakes held earlier in the carnival at Rosehill or the Gr2 Adrian Knox Stakes the previous week at Randwick.
The race has been won by some classy fillies over the years, including Grand Archway (1999), Triscay (1991) and Research (1989), who all went on to become outstanding mares of the Australian turf.
Absolutely (2011) ran third in the Gr1 Australasian Oaks over 2000m at Morphettville prior to scoring an easy victory in this event on a heavy track and recent AJC Australian Oaks winners have been Once Were Wild (2010) and Daffodil (2009.
