The AJC Australian Derby is a Group 1 race for three-year-olds that takes place each April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales.The classic race is run over a distance of 2400 metres under set weight conditions and is worth $1,300,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 AJC Australian Derby was won by Shoot Out from Descarado with Monaco Consul third.
The AJC Derby is held on the same day as fellow Group 1 races the TJ Smith Stakes and AJC Sires Produce Stakes.

The AJC Australian Derby is the premier race for three-year-olds to be held during the Sydney autumn carnival and is run over the classic derby distance of 2400m at set weights which favours the classier types. The race has become a prestigous event for three-year-olds on the Australian racing calendar and has a proud history of providing 3yo winners who go on to become stars of the Australian racing scene.
Gallopers of the ilk of Sky Heights (1999), Octagonal (1996), Mahogany (1994), Naturalism (1992), and Durbridge (1991) all won the AJC Derby before going on to win many of Australia's premier races year after year.
Any three-year-olds contesting the Derby will typically come via major 3yo races like the Gr1 Randwick Guineas at Randwick four weeks earlier, the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) two weeks prior, or the Gr2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) held the previous Saturday.
The AJC Derby is a blue ribbon event and can enhance the winners value immensely should they go on to become a stallion or a broodmare at the end of their career.
In recent times the Derby has proven a handy guide to the Gr1 Caulfield Cup during the spring in Melbourne, with Nom Du Jeu (2008) and Roman Emperor (2009) both finishing runner-up in the Caulfield Cup the following spring after winning the Derby.
Shoot Out (2010) won the Randwick Guineas and then ran fourth in the Rosehill Guineas on his way to scoring in this race and recent winners of the AJC Derby have been Roman Emperor (2009) and Nom De Jeu (2008).

2010 AJC Derby result: Shoot Out came from well back in the straight with his usual finishing burst and ran home too strongly to score an excellent Derby win from Descarado second, who raced handily all the way and fought on valiantly, while Monaco Consul got home nicely in the straight to grab third spot.
